Adam's Peak

About Adam's Peak

Solitary and magnificent, Adam's Peak — known locally as Sri Pada (the Sacred Footprint) — is a soaring, 2,243-metre conical mountain that holds a profound, unifying place in the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka. Revered for centuries by multiple faiths, the mountain features a sacred rock formation near its summit believed by Buddhists to be the footprint of Lord Buddha, by Hindus to belong to Lord Shiva, and by Christians and Muslims to mark the spot where Adam first set foot on Earth after leaving paradise. This shared reverence transforms the mountain into an incredible place of harmony, drawing thousands of diverse pilgrims who climb side-by-side every year.

The journey up Sri Pada is as much a spiritual pilgrimage as it is a demanding physical challenge. The most popular path begins in Nallathanniya (Dalhousie), ascending a gruelling but well-maintained staircase of over 5,000 stone steps that wind through lush tea plantations and dense, mist-laden cloud forests. During the peak pilgrimage season, the entire trail is illuminated by a long, glowing ribbon of electric lights that cuts beautifully through the dark night sky. Most hikers begin their challenging trek around midnight, braving the dropping temperatures and steep inclines to reach the windy summit just before dawn. There, as the morning sun breaks over the horizon, the mountain casts its legendary, perfectly triangular shadow across the surrounding blanket of clouds, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle.

Best Time to Visit

The official pilgrimage season begins on the full moon day of December (Uduvap Poya) and lasts until the full moon day of May (Vesak Poya). During these months, the weather is at its driest, the trails are fully illuminated, and medical stalls are active along the path. Climbing outside this window means dealing with heavy monsoonal rains, thick fog, and dark trails.

Getting There

The primary base for the climb is Nallathanniya. Travellers typically take a scenic train from Kandy or Colombo to Hatton railway station, which takes roughly 3 to 4.5 hours. From Hatton, regular public buses, private taxis, and local tuk-tuks run frequently directly to the trailhead, a journey of about 1.5 hours through rolling hills and reservoirs.
