About Colombo
Sprawled dynamically along the western coast, Colombo is Sri Lanka's vibrant, fast-evolving commercial capital and the colourful gateway to the island. This bustling oceanfront metropolis is a striking study in contrasts, where glossy skyscrapers, sleek rooftop lounges, and ultra-modern shopping malls stand side-by-side with grand British colonial architecture, centuries-old temples, and chaotic, energetic street markets. Colombo beautifully reflects the multi-ethnic identity of modern Sri Lanka, blending a fast-paced urban lifestyle with easy-going island charm.
The heart of the city's identity can be felt at Galle Face Green, a vast oceanfront promenade where locals gather at sunset to fly kites, walk along the waves, and snack on spicy street food like isso wade (prawn fritters). Just a short distance away lies the historic Fort district, where beautifully restored colonial buildings house trendy restaurants, alongside Pettah Market — a buzzing maze of open-air streets overflowing with colourful textiles, fresh spices, and tropical fruits. For a moment of serenity amidst the urban energy, visitors can retreat to the floating Gangaramaya Temple on Beira Lake, an eclectic spiritual sanctuary that holds a massive collection of Buddhist artefacts, or explore the tree-lined avenues of Cinnamon Gardens.
