Dambulla Golden Temple

About Dambulla Golden Temple

Carved directly into a massive, isolated rock outcrop that towers over the surrounding plains, the Dambulla Golden Temple — also known as the Dambulla Cave Temple — is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of five separate, majestic sanctuaries hidden beneath a sweeping rock overhang. Used as a place of refuge by King Valagamba in the 1st century BC, the grateful monarch transformed these natural caves into a magnificent rock monastery, which was continuously embellished by successive kings over the next two millennia.

Stepping inside the cool, dimly lit caverns reveals an astonishing treasure trove of ancient Buddhist art and sculpture. The walls and soaring ceilings are covered in intricate, vibrant murals that cover every square inch of the rock surfaces, depicting key moments from Buddha's life and important historical events. Across the five caves, visitors are surrounded by 153 remarkably preserved Buddha statues of various sizes, alongside sculptures of ancient Sri Lankan kings and Hindu deities. From the monumental 14-metre reclining Buddha carved right out of the living rock in the first cave, to the dramatic dripping water feature in the second, Dambulla stands as a spectacular sanctuary where spirituality and ancient artistry meet.
