Ella Nine Arch Bridge

About Ella Nine Arch Bridge

Tucked away in the misty hills of Sri Lanka's central highlands, the Nine Arch Bridge is one of the country's most photographed landmarks. Built entirely of stone, brick, and cement without a single piece of steel, this colonial-era railway viaduct stands as a striking symbol of early 20th-century engineering set against a backdrop of dense jungle and rolling tea plantations.

Also known as the 'Bridge in the Sky', the viaduct spans a deep valley at a height of around 24 metres and stretches roughly 91 metres across nine graceful arches. Legend has it that when construction began, the outbreak of the First World War cut off the supply of steel, so local builders completed the bridge using only stone and brick — a testament to Sri Lankan ingenuity that has kept it standing for over a century.

The magic of Nine Arch Bridge comes alive when a blue train winds slowly across it, framed by emerald greenery and often wrapped in gentle highland mist. Visitors gather on the surrounding hillsides and tea trails to capture the moment, making it one of the most iconic scenes in all of Sri Lanka. Beyond the bridge itself, the walk to reach it — through tea estates and small village paths — is an experience in its own right.

Best Time to Visit

The bridge is beautiful year-round, but the drier months from December to March offer the clearest skies and best photo conditions. For the classic shot of a train crossing, check local train timings — mornings and mid-afternoon are popular crossing windows, though times vary, so ask locally or at your guesthouse.

Getting There

Nine Arch Bridge sits between Ella and Demodara stations. From Ella town it's about a 20-30 minute walk downhill through tea plantations, or a short tuk-tuk ride to the trailhead followed by a brief walk. Ella itself is reachable by the famously scenic train ride from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya — one of the most beautiful rail journeys in the world.
