About Galle Dutch Fort
Perched on the southwestern coast where the Indian Ocean meets historic stone ramparts, Galle Dutch Fort is a living monument that beautifully weaves European colonial architecture with South Asian traditions. Originally built by the Portuguese in the late 16th century and later heavily fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century, this UNESCO World Heritage site is an exceptionally well-preserved seaside citadel. Walking through its grand stone gates feels like stepping into a bygone era, where historic bastions seamlessly blend into a vibrant, modern community.
Inside the fort's thick coral-and-granite walls lies a charming labyrinth of narrow cobblestone streets lined with red-tiled Dutch colonial villas, historic churches, and majestic old warehouses. Today, these historic buildings house a trendy collection of boutique hotels, art galleries, cosy cafes, and artisanal shops, giving Galle Fort an unmistakable bohemian charm. The iconic white Galle Lighthouse stands proudly on the Point Utrecht Bastion, a picturesque beacon framed by swaying palm trees and crashing waves. At sunset, locals and travellers alike gather along the western ramparts to walk the historic walls, watch daring cliff-divers, and take in panoramic views of the glowing ocean.
