About Jaffna

Located on the northernmost tip of the island, Jaffna offers a captivating, deeply authentic travel experience that feels wonderfully distinct from the rest of Sri Lanka. Adorned with vibrant palmyra palms, shallow glassy lagoons, and historic colonial ruins, this resilient peninsula serves as the vibrant heart of Tamil culture, art, and Hindu tradition. After being tucked away from mainstream tourism for decades, Jaffna has opened its doors to reveal a world filled with grand, colourful Hindu temples, unique culinary flavours, and an incredibly warm, welcoming local community.

The undisputed centrepiece of the city is the majestic Nallur Kandaswamy Kovil, an expansive Hindu temple complex featuring a towering, golden gopuram gateway and an incredibly spiritual atmosphere inside. Wandering through the town, you'll encounter the massive star-shaped Jaffna Fort, constructed out of local coral by the Portuguese and Dutch, alongside the elegant, neo-classical Jaffna Public Library. Beyond the city centre, the Jaffna peninsula extends into a collection of quiet, pristine islands like Nainativu and Neduntivu (Delft Island), where wild horses roam across rugged plains and ancient baobab trees stand against the sea breeze. Food lovers will also find paradise here, tasting rich, fiery Jaffna crab curries and sweet palmyra fruit preserves.
