Nestled in the lush, mountain-fringed heart of Sri Lanka's cultural capital, the Sri Dalada Maligawa, or Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, is the most sacred Buddhist shrine on the island. Located within the royal palace complex of the former Kandyan Kingdom, this golden-roofed temple houses a priceless relic — the sacred left canine tooth of Lord Buddha. Because the relic historically symbolised the divine right to rule, it holds deep spiritual, political, and historical significance, making Kandy a powerful beacon of devotion for millions of pilgrims worldwide.

The temple complex is a stunning showcase of classical Kandyan architecture, featuring intricate wood carvings, painted ceilings, polished ivory inlays, and walls adorned with elegant gold and silver work. As you walk through the moonstone paths and into the drum-filled corridors during the daily thevava (prayers), the air fills with the sweet scent of frangipani blossoms and burning incense. White-clad devotees quietly offer lotus flowers outside the heavily guarded inner sanctum where the relic is kept inside a series of nested, jewel-encrusted golden stupas. Outside, the temple overlooks the peaceful, mist-shrouded Kandy Lake, creating a serene, spiritual atmosphere that defines the unique character of this historic hill station.
