About Negombo

Located just a stone's throw from Sri Lanka's international airport, Negombo is a historic, sun-drenched coastal town that offers far more than just a convenient stopover. Set along the shores of a massive, shimmering lagoon and the open Indian Ocean, Negombo is deeply rooted in a proud fishing heritage and a rich colonial past. Influenced heavily by Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, the town is affectionately known as 'Little Rome' due to the striking collection of grand, pastel-coloured Catholic churches that dominate its skyline, adding a unique architectural charm to this vibrant seaside community.

The true soul of Negombo can be found along its bustling shores at the dawn Lellama fish market. Here, hundreds of traditional outrigger canoes and colourful wooden trawlers return from the deep sea to unload a massive bounty of fresh crabs, prawns, and tuna onto the sand, creating an authentic, high-energy spectacle. Beyond the beaches, a peaceful boat safari down the historic Hamilton Canal — built by the Dutch to transport spices — takes you through tranquil mangrove forests and into the Negombo Lagoon, a pristine sanctuary rich in water birds. With its long sandy beaches, excellent seafood restaurants, and laid-back coastal road, Negombo serves as the perfect, relaxing welcome or farewell to the island.
