Nuwara Eliya

About Nuwara Eliya

Tucked away in the highest reaches of Sri Lanka's misty central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is a dreamy alpine escape often called 'Little England.' Perched at an elevation of nearly 1,900 metres, this charming mountain station offers a wonderfully cool, crisp climate that feels worlds away from the tropical heat of the coast. Originally developed by British tea planters in the 19th century as a highland sanctuary, the town still retains a distinct old-world British charm, characterised by manicured lawns, red-brick colonial mansions, Tudor-style hotels, and a historic 18-hole golf course.

The landscapes surrounding Nuwara Eliya are truly breathtaking, defined by endless rolling hills carpeted in neat, emerald-green tea bushes and broken up by cascading waterfalls like St. Clair's and Devon Falls. A visit here offers a fascinating look into the world of Ceylon tea; you can tour historic tea factories, watch skilled pluckers working on the hillsides, and sample fresh, premium brews. In the centre of town, the peaceful Gregory Lake offers boat rides and walking paths, while the nearby Victoria Park provides a quiet space filled with colourful roses and rare alpine birds. Nuwara Eliya is also the perfect base for trekking to Horton Plains National Park, an otherworldly cloud forest that ends abruptly at the dramatic World's End cliff drop-off.
